A Family Tour Journey Through Laos — 6 to 8 Days in Green Season

The private  Laos family tour that isn’t a resort or a theme park. A real country, a Laoborn guide, and a pace set by your children — not by a group.

Most family trips in Southeast Asia end at the same places — Phuket pools, Bali kids’ clubs, Bangkok megamalls. Your children return home with nothing to tell their classmates. This is the alternative. Six to eight days across Vientiane, Vang Vieng, and Luang Prabang, with an optional extension to Nong Khiaw — the quietest river valley in Asia. Founder-standard private guiding. Lao-born team. Green season means half-price hotels, half the crowds, and a landscape at its greenest. Designed to match your children’s age, your family’s pace, and the questions they will actually ask.

Why Green Season Is Actually the Best Season for Families

June through September is when Laos is at its greenest. Rice paddies fill with water, the Mekong runs full, waterfalls are at their most dramatic, and the light turns the landscape cinematic.

It also coincides with school holidays across the US, UK, Europe, and Australia — which means you can actually take your children without pulling them from class.

What Green Season Actually Looks Like

• Rain arrives in short 1–2 hour afternoon bursts, usually between 2pm and 4pm
• Mornings and evenings are clear and pleasant
• Temperatures stay between 23°C and 31°C — cooler than peak season
• Hotels are 40–50% cheaper than November–February rates at the same 3-4 star properties
• Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng have a fraction of the peak-season crowds
• Waterfalls like Kuang Si are at their most powerful and visually dramatic

Who Green Season Works Best For

Families with school-age children (the holiday window fits exactly), couples seeking quieter temples and fewer tour buses, photographers who prefer moody skies and dramatic light, and budget-conscious travelers who want the same hotels for significantly less.

The Route — Three Cities, One River Valley, Endless Moments

Vientiane

The Mekong capital. Gentle introduction to Laos for children. COPE Visitor Centre for age-appropriate history (10+), Pha That Luang golden stupa, Buddha Park (where kids climb inside a giant pumpkin sculpture), and the riverside night market where locals actually shop.

Vang Vieng

Karst limestone country. Kayaking the Nam Song (safe family sections), swimming at the Blue Lagoon, cave exploration at Tham Phu Kam, and optional early-morning hot air balloon rides. This is the adventure heart of the journey — most kids name Vang Vieng as their favorite city.

Luang Prabang

UNESCO heritage. Sunrise alms ceremony, Kuang Si Waterfall for swimming in turquoise pools, TAEC ethnic textile museum with loom demonstrations, and the night market for family shopping. A quieter, more cultural pace after the adventure of Vang Vieng.

Nong Khiaw (Optional Extension)

The quietest river valley in Southeast Asia. Morning viewpoint hikes manageable for ages 8+, river kayaking, cave visits, and some of the best family river swimming anywhere. Added for families who want the 8-day version and a slower close.

This Journey Bends to Your Children, Not the Other Way Around

Because every journey is private — one family, one guide, one schedule — we adjust the pace, activities, and timing to your children’s age, your family’s energy, and anything specific you tell us in advance.

Younger Kids (Ages 5–9)
More pool time, earlier bedtimes, shorter drives, less walking, more hands-on activities, longer afternoons at the hotel. We can skip the COPE Centre and swap in lighter alternatives.

Tweens (Ages 10–13)
Add caves, longer kayaking sections, cooking classes, and the kind of cultural stories that make a 12-year-old look up from their phone. This is our favorite age bracket for this journey — they are old enough to engage, young enough to be wide-eyed.

Teenagers (14+)
Add cultural depth — weaving villages, UXO history conversations, monk-intraining encounters, photography walks. Teenagers respond to seriousness when you give them the chance. We’ve had reluctant teenagers come back asking to return to Laos on their own.

Multi-Generational Groups
We plan the pace around the slowest walker, build in rest mornings, and choose hotels with elevators and ground-floor rooms. Grandparents often become the favorite traveler in these groups — they have the time and patience to listen to what their grandchildren are discovering.

Special Considerations
Allergies, dietary requirements, mobility limitations, preferred bedtimes, carsickness sensitivities, introverted children who need quiet days between active days — tell us in advance, and we plan around every one.

Your Guide — Lao-Born, Licensed, Family-Experienced

Every Brother Tours guide is born and raised in Laos and holds a valid Lao National Tour Guide license. For family journeys, we assign guides with specific family experience — patient with children, calm under stress, good at answering the fifth “why” in a row.

Our founder Ken FJ Her has been a licensed Lao National Tour Guide since 2010 and founded Brother Tours in 2018. Every family guide on our team was trained personally by him and holds to the same standard.

This is not their job. This is their home. When a Lao guide walks you through Luang Prabang, they are not performing cultural commentary — they are sharing the city they grew up in. Your children will feel the difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is green season really okay for families?
Yes — it is actually the best season for most families. Rain arrives in short 1–2 hour afternoon bursts, usually between 2pm and 4pm. Mornings and evenings are clear. Temperatures are cooler than peak season (23–31°C vs 30–36°C). All activities on this itinerary are fine in green season weather. The “rainy season” reputation is
significantly exaggerated.

What age range works best for this trip?
Ages 7 to 17 is our sweet spot. Children 5–6 can travel with us with some modifications — more pool time, earlier days, fewer caves. Children under 5 are welcome but require significant pace adjustment. Teenagers do especially well on this journey, often better than parents expect.

Are there any ages this does not work for?
Toddlers under 3 are difficult — long drives, heat, and activity pace make it challenging. For under-3s we can design a simpler 4–5 day version focused on Luang Prabang only, with no Vang Vieng or long transfers.

Is Laos safe for children?
Yes. Laos is one of the safest countries in Southeast Asia for family travel. Petty crime is very low, food standards at our recommended hotels are reliable, and our guides carry first-aid kits and have clinic protocols in every region.

What about food for picky eaters?
All hotels serve Western breakfasts. Lunch and dinner options include pizza, pasta, burgers, and Western-friendly food in every city. Lao food is mild, rice-based, and most children enjoy it after the first day.

Can we adjust the schedule if our children are tired?
Yes — this is the main benefit of a private tour. We can add a pool day, skip an activity, extend a breakfast, or swap anything that is not working. Your guide will check in with you each evening to adjust the next day.

Do you combine our family with other families?
No. Every journey is private to your booking only. You will not be joined by strangers.

What about travel insurance?
We require all guests to have travel insurance with medical and trip interruption coverage. We can recommend family-friendly providers including World Nomads, SafetyWing, and Allianz Global.

What is the best time to book for summer travel?
Book 10–14 weeks in advance for June-August travel. Hotels in Luang Prabang in July-August fill up by early May — later inquiries can still be accommodated but with fewer accommodation options.
