How to Enter
Enter from Vientiane by road with a licensed operator, about 230 km to the province. Permission for Long Tieng must be arranged before you leave, and your guide should confirm current conditions. Do not arrive without it. The US rates the province Level 3, so confirm insurance in writing first.
Route 1: Long Tieng to Xieng Khouang
Our recommended route runs Long Tieng, then Xangthong (spelling to confirm with the team), then the Plain of Jars Site 2, ending in Phonsavan. On the way, stop at Ban Naphia, where villagers make spoons from scrap metal recovered from bombs. It is a direct look at how the Secret War legacy became a local craft. Road conditions vary, so allow a full day with a driver who knows the route.
Route 2: Long Tieng to Vang Vieng
From Long Tieng, travel via the Nam Ngum Dam and cross by small ferry boat, about 1.5 hours on the water, then continue by road to Vang Vieng. This loop returns you to the standard route after seeing a part of Laos most visitors never reach. Check the ferry schedule in advance.
Route 3: Anouvong and South to Kong Lor
Anouvong, the capital of the province, is named for the last king of the Lao kingdom of Vientiane, heir to Lan Xang. Local tradition holds that after he lost the war with Siam, he fled and hid in this area. Visit Chao Anouvong Cave. The oldest village is Mong Cha: Mong means city and Cha is the river that runs through the heart of Anouvong. From here travelers can continue south toward Kong Lor Cave, the Nakai-Nam Theun biodiversity area, and the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
Where to Stay
We do not publish lodging we have not verified this season. Expect simple guesthouses in the province. Better options are in Vientiane before entry, Phonsavan after Route 1, and Vang Vieng after Route 2. Ask Brother Tours for the current verified list.
Where to Go Next
Plain of Jars sites and Phonsavan after Route 1, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang after Route 2, Kong Lor and Thakhek after Route 3. See our province guide and permits and insurance before you plan.
