Planning guide
Eight to fourteen days lets a private journey breathe. Shorter is possible in one region.
November to February is dry, cool and busiest. The green season, roughly June to October, is quieter and often the better time to have a place to yourself.
Chosen individually for each journey. We recommend rather than upsell, and will say when the more expensive option is not the better one.
Where the Mekong or the Nam Ou is the best route, a private boat is usually worth more to the day than a faster road.

Ken's note
The most expensive room in Laos is rarely the best one. Some of the finest places to stay here have twelve rooms and no spa, and the reason to choose them is where they are and how quiet they are at six in the morning.
What genuinely costs money, and is genuinely worth it, is privacy and time — a boat that is yours for the day, a guide who is not watching the clock, and a schedule loose enough to change.
