How do I watch respectfully?
Stand back from the line of almsgivers, keep quiet, and never use flash or step into the monks’ path. Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees), remove hats, and if you want to photograph, do it discreetly from distance without blocking anyone.
Can visitors give alms?
Yes, if done properly: kneel on a mat at the roadside level with the givers, offer plain sticky rice you have prepared yourself, and keep your head lower than the monks’. Buying rice just to hand it over for a photo is exactly the behaviour that has damaged the ceremony’s reputation — participate sincerely or simply observe.
Where and when does it happen?
Luang Prabang is the most famous setting, daily at first light — roughly 05:30–06:30 depending on the season, along the main streets of the old town. Similar ceremonies happen in Vientiane and other towns on a smaller scale. Your guide can position you at a quiet, respectful spot away from the crowds.
