Laos Restricted Areas, Travel Permits, and Insurance: What Every Adventurous Traveler Should Check

November 7, 2026 · Ripon Hossian

Local licensed guide escorting tourists through restricted mountain trails in Laos

Some Laos areas, including Long Tieng and Phou Bia, need official permission and a licensed guide. Check insurance in writing before you book.

Advisory Status (July 28, 2026 Update)

• US State Department: Rates Laos Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) and Xaisomboun Province Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) because of civil unrest.

• UK FCDO: Advises against all but essential travel to the province, and travel insurance may not cover you there.

• Canada: Advises permission and caution around Long Tieng.

Check each government site before you book.

Where Permission Applies

Long Tieng is a restricted military area, and Phou Bia requires permission and a guide. Both are linked with Xaisomboun, which carries a Level 3 US advisory.

Who Arranges Permission

Permission is obtained through licensed operators with local relationships. Do not rely on an informal driver or an online forum.

Insurance Questions to Ask

Does the policy cover the exact district? Does it exclude areas under a government advisory? Will it pay for evacuation? Ask for the answers in writing.

Documents to Carry

Passport, visa, insurance policy, permission letters where relevant, and copies of each. LaoVisaGateway can help with visa questions before you travel.

A Decision Rule

If you cannot get permission, insurance, and a licensed guide, do not go. Choose an alternative from our Northern Laos destination guide.
