How long is the train from Vientiane to Boten?
The full line runs around four hours end to end, with Luang Prabang roughly two hours from Vientiane. Times vary by service — some trains run express, others stop at every station — so we check the current timetable when planning your travel day.
Do I need my passport at the stations?
Yes. ID or passport checks are standard at Lao railway stations, with airport-style security screening. If you are continuing through Boten into China, your passport and Chinese visa are checked at the border crossing there — build in buffer time on border days.
Should I buy tickets in advance?
For popular departures — especially Vientiane–Luang Prabang in high season — yes. Tickets go on sale a few days ahead and sell out on peak dates. We can arrange tickets and station transfers as part of your journey so you travel with confirmed seats.
Is the railway a good way to see Laos?
It is an excellent backbone: fast, smooth and scenic between the major stops. We usually combine it with private vehicle days for the villages and viewpoints the rail line skips — train for distance, road for depth.
