Northern Laos

Where Laos becomes slow

Northern Laos is the country at its quietest and most cultural: UNESCO Luang Prabang, the karst country of Nong Khiaw, the slow boats of the Nam Ou, the high-altitude tea forests of Phongsali, and the treetop ziplines of the Bokeo Gibbon Experience.

Best places to visit

  • Luang Prabang — UNESCO heritage city; alms ceremony and royal palace
  • Nong Khiaw — karst-valley village; viewpoints and kayaking
  • Phongsali — high-altitude tea forests and Akha hill-tribe culture
  • Pak Ou Caves — Buddha-filled river caves reached by boat
  • Plain of Jars — megalithic stone jars and UNESCO archaeology

Travel tips

  • Best season: November to February (cool and dry).
  • Recommended length: 7–14 days.
  • Pack a light merino layer — November mornings in Phongsali drop to 12°C.
  • Book private slow boats 6 weeks ahead in December–February.
